Prompts
In these dark days of war I’ve tried my best to keep informed and request that my government representatives respect my point of view. However, there are moments when it is necessary to escape from reality. Books and writing have been my solace. My writing group has been especially uplifting as we meet once a month to share our work and write short pieces in response to ‘prompts’. One prompt we followed was: tell a story that takes place on a plane. A fellow writer amused us all with her setting describing a woman trapped in a seat next to an enormous man. Another wrote about a lacklustre accountant suddenly fleeing the country due to events that had gotten beyond his control. I’m dying to find out what happened to both of these characters.
I worked with the prompt: after midnight. I’d previously written an entire story on this premise and have submitted it to a writing contest (fingers crossed). This time, after a glass of wine (our meetings are in a pub) my thoughts took a darker turn. I started a story about a phone that comes in after midnight…
So far I have over 5000 words. We shall see where that piece goes!
